World Down Syndrome Day | March 21, 2023
Also called Down syndrome, is a genetic disease resulting from a chromosomal abnormality. In principle, humans have 46 chromosomes organized in 23 pairs, but for the carrier of this syndrome, chromosome n°21 is in three copies instead of two. This means that carriers of trisomy 21 have 47 chromosomes, which leads to :
- Health problems: heart malformations, gastrointestinal malformations
- Slower learning: walking, language, writing
- Physical characteristics: round face, obliquity of the eyes
- Lifetime complications: visual, auditory or orthopedic
According to the United Nations, Down syndrome occurs in between 1 and 1,000 births worldwide.
Each year between 3,000 and 5,000 children are born with Down syndrome.
In the United States, for example, approximately 250,000 families are affected by Down syndrome.
